A Film Isn't Finished Until It Is Seen
Southampton International Film Festival
Southampton International Film Festival was the brainchild of two movie nuts who happen to be brothers, Richard and Christopher Abbott.
Christopher Abbott and Emily Wain ran A1 Pictures, a specialist Independent Film Distributor. In 2011, A1 Pictures invited a select few films it had seen to a small event in Southampton where the filmmakers got together networked and met other local filmmakers. It was after this that the filmmakers told us how much they enjoyed the city and if we were going to do an annual event. We thought, why not?
Richard Abbott joined the team from A1 Pictures, and the event received its name - the Southampton International Film Festival. A few months later we put out a call for filmmakers across the world to enter their films and the response was amazing. The festival received close to 400 films being entered from every continent and received the support of Councillor Matt Tucker and Southampton City Council. The festival had a heart beat. In 2014 the festival passed from from A1 Pictures, and the existing team augmented by Festival Director Peter Murfet with his background in film criticism and independent filmmaking.
With the increasing demands of new story lines and storytelling, we believe our international independent film festival is well positioned to help move this forward with significant success. Our vision is to bring independent movies to Southampton and even help kick-start and inspire new movie makers. Southampton International Film Festival has the goal of becoming the UK’s largest international film festival bringing with it the ability to start the UK’s international film market specialising in independent film.
